Jack embraces every part of his routine, beginning with waking up Johnny and getting fed: “It’s my favorite time of day!” Although Jack constantly knocks things over with his ever wagging tail, no one seems to mind. At the day’s end, everyone says good night to Jack. In his book, Rouillard tells a sweet, happy story. – Kirkus Reviews

Told from a dog’s perspective, Whack, Whack, Whack, Goes the Tail is an amusing picture book about one family and their excitable dog, Jack. The illustrations alternate between the serene and the turbulent, but ultimately the message in this book is one of unconditional love between a family and their pet. Author Mark Rouillard’s most effective and engaging use of language is the repetitive refrain of “Whack, whack, whack, goes the tail.” Young readers will enjoy participating in this part of the storytelling, and the colorful cartoon illustrations by David Burk should be enough to prompt even non-readers to begin the chant. Any family that has ever participated in training a puppy will be able to appreciate this humorous picture book.

I really liked that the family loved their dog Jack, and that he really loved him them. He showed his love by waking Johnny up, standing still for a portrait, and trying to protect his mom. I also liked the art because it’s so funny. The family is taking a nice picture on the front cover, but on the back, you see the kids go flying because Jack accidently whacked them with his tail. I really liked throughout the book that Jack would whack someone and things would go flying. I would recommend “Whack, Whack, Whack Goes the Tail!” by Mark Rouillard to other little girls my age because it is a really great story and I think other kids would like it too because it is so funny.

April 2017 by Susanne C. - I love this book for its fun theme in regards to this adorable dog. It has a great message and kids will love all the situations this dog and his tail find him in. The fun thing about this book is that eventually the kids know what is coming and will be excited to recite the words out loud..."whack, whack, whack goes the tail".

May 2017 by Bruce A. - This delightful “tail” is filled with bright colors and humor that will keep adults and kids laughing, as they fondly remember their favorite dogs–now, or as they were growing up. It’s about a pup who wants to be involved in everything the family is, and even though messes are made, the family always loves the dog, and the dog always loves the family.
It’s a great story suitable for bedtimes, family times, or whenever a child needs to be comforted. Both Mark and David have created a positive story for children, successfully embracing the relationships between family and pets.
